Snake Map of India

It took us a long time to collect pictures and collect data of 33 most common snakes all over India to finally publish one of a kind 2 feet by 3 feet poster calendar. A press conference was held at Kolkata Press Club on march 9, 2012.Now the goal is to distribute this map to rural public health centers, schools, libraries and relevant places so the villagers in India can be saved from snakebite deaths. It is estimated that about 40 to 50 thousand people die from snakebites in India. Poster calendar (2'x3') of snake map of India: snake map of India

5. Signature Campaign and mass movement for the protection of Royal Bengal Tigers of Sundarbans – July 2001.

7. Sensitisation Programme organized at N.R.S. Hospital with the doctors on invitation of Dr. Alok Ghosh, Head of the Department of Medicine – 17.09.2002.
8. Participation of “Ojhas and Gunins” on snake related workshop.
9. “Snakes of Sundarbans” Documentary film shown at NANDAN and letter of appreciation by the C.M. of West Bengal – 12.06.2004.

11. The research paper regarding interrelation between Banded Krait and Common Krait nominated and read in “Bengal Science Congress”.

13. Raised doubts about the quality of A.V.S. supply to Canning Subdivisional Hospital.
14. Publication of map of India and statewise map of West Bengal – first time on the basis of snakes – namely ‘Manchitra Banglar Saap’ opening ceremony by Chief Minister of West Bengal.
15. Cycle ralley throughout West Bengal with a slogan save snakes – save lives – 16th April – 5th May 2007.
16. 2nd time raised doubts about the quality of A.V.S. supply and organized deputation – 25.07.2008.
17. Honouring the doctors, nurses and other staff of Canning Subdivisional Hospital regarding the achievement of snake bite treatment.
18. Awareness programme organized – financed by NRHM of W. Bengal Govt. on snakes, snake bites and treatment - started from 05.02.2008.
19. Organised training to ICDS workers of different sub-divisional levels on snake related matter – 2008-2009.
20. Organised sensitisation programme among the B.M.O.H. on invitation of C.M.O.H. of East Midnapore and same programme at Zila Parishad.
21. Active participation in medical and other services in flood affected and other natural disaster areas.

1. “Workshop on Snakes, Snake-bites and its remedies” – 32 Workshop held.
2. Rally on 15th August – “Save People, Save Snakes” under this banner – Street drama, Lectures, Snake shows, etc. Rally of 10 Kms.
3. “Vramyaman Lokbijnan Mela” – 21st year.
4. Organising “Health-care Camps” at Sundarbans sponsored by Sundarban Tiger Reserve.
5. Campaign against superstition – Supernatural – all that happens are natural.
6. Street Drama.
7. Snake awareness program through puppet show.
8. “NO MORE DEATH DUE TO SNAKE BITE” – real snake show.
9. Rescue work for injured or trapped victims.
10. Document collection of death due to Snake-bite.
11. Setting up of stall at Ganga Sagar Mela. (8 years)
12. Invitation to the Hospital Staffs, examining and giving confidence program – Invited by the family members of the patients who died due to snake-bites.
13. Awareness about a particular medicine which is very effective regarding snake-bites are out of supply some times – That medicine being provided to 40 patients free of cost.

We published many leaflets, books and maps.

CJSS published many leaflets and books on many topics like snakes, lightning, intestinal disorders, black fever, malaria and even ghosts.

Enjoy a 23 minutes video on snakes of Sunderban

This video CD discussses about the superstitions the villagers have regarding snakes and snakebites. With the help of JSS, they are now learning not to chant the Goddess of snakes or go to faith-healers, instead now they go to local hospitals and treat the snakebite victims with AVS.

Taking care of education and health of local children.

We started tutoring 47 children (class I through VII) from our neighborhood under the banner - Asoke Bandopadhya Pothan Pathan Kendra. We also take care of their health by conducting regular medical checkups and providing them with appropriate medicines.

Over the years, we had various programs like workshops, exhibitions, puppet shows, street-dramas, rescuing of snakes, video documentary on the snakes of Sundarban, distribution of different life-saving drugs, supplying AVS to many hospitals in our area.

Working with hospitals

We started working with many doctors and hospitals in our communities on how we can treat people bitten by snakes with the right medicines and on time. We collected a vast amount of data from people affected by snakes. We created charts and maps to identify the types of snakes from the symptoms.
