About us

Introduction: Juktibadi Sanskritik Sanstha, canning, West Bengal, India (CJSS) was formed by a few enthusiast young in their twenties in1986 at Canning, (http://goo.gl/maps/Jjfv2 ) the gateway to the world's large biodiversity area near Sunderban, the home of Royal Bengal tigers and variety of snakes. Initially CJSS concentrated on the issues like

  • make the villagers aware of the environment, the nature and the society around them

  • eradicate superstition and educate villagers about common diseases, snakebites, ghosts etc.

  • educate villagers on how to treat a snakebite patient. Now they know that it is AVS that saves the lives, not the faith-healers and chanting

  • educate villagers about common diseases like cholera, intestine disorders, black fever etc.

Brief History: For the last 25 years or so, the campaign to eradicate superstitions from the minds of the villagers gathered momentum. Due to its pro-people oriented approach, CJSS has been able to draw attention of the National Rural Health Mission (http://www.mohfw.nic.in/NRHM.htm) , a flagship organization of the Government of India among a few other government agencies. Even though many of the officials at these agencies very much appreciate what CJSS has been doing over the years, they simply can't help CJSS financially to accomplish most the dreams it has.

CJSS constantly adopted new approaches to reach the local people over these years

  • setting up exhibitions in different villages on various forms of superstitions

  • bicycle rally distributing leaflets on various issues

  • various publications on superstitions, common diseases, snakebites etc.

  • publish snake maps of 24-Paraganas, Bengal and India " puppet shows to educate people about snakebites

  • survey of snakebites victims in almost all districts in 24-paragans - covering an area of about 20 miles radius

  • Relief activities for natural disasters like Cyclone Aila in Sunderban area http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclone_Aila

  • Tutoring center for disadvantaged students (grade I through VII)

  •  Empowering women, mostly mothers of the children of the tutoring center

  • Setting up medical camps to check general health of the children, giving vaccines, eye examinations, cataract operations etc.

People Being Helped: The target people are not just the villagers, but also the faith-healers who treat snakebite victims and victims possessed by ghosts and demons. CJSS successfully turned 4 faith-healers into members of CJSS. This, one of the biggest achievements of CJSS, simply made a big impact in the minds of the villagers. CJSS has been working with the doctors of the local hospital and who became loyal supporters of CJSS and have been giving their valuable time to treat the children and people of our community from regular checkups to eye examinations and of course, treating snakebite victims saving hundreds of lives over the years. All of these activities made a name for CJSS as a progressive social work organization in the eastern region in India.
